Blue Tansy Essential Oil Uses & Benefits

Maintaining a youthful, glowing complexion enhances your every encounter with the world.  Investing in your skin with Blue Tansy essential oil will pay off in not only your renewed skin tone but also in a rejuvenated body and mind after exercise or busy days. Its unique color, skin-cleansing properties, and subtle fruity aroma make it an oil that is unmistakable and irreplaceable in your daily routines.

BACKGROUND

Also known as Moroccan Tansy, Blue Tansy essential oil comes from a plant in the daisy family that produces tightly-clustered yellow flowers. Its trademark blue color comes from the constituent chamazulene released during distillation.  DoTERRA harvests Blue Tansy in northern Morocco, its native habitat, and steam distills the oil from the plant’s flower, leaf, and stem. Though this is an oil that should not be taken internally, it has numerous uses both aromatically and topically.  Just be aware: Blue Tansy is a dark indigo color that is capable of staining fabrics and skin when it is not diluted. Don’t let that stop you from trying it out, though — its benefits to your body and home are many!

GLOWING COMPLEXION

Blue Tansy’s primary constituents – chamazulene and sabinene – have been found to be effective in cleansing, soothing, and clearing blemished skin.  Chamazulene, the compound that gives Blue Tansy its trademark color, has surface-cleansing properties that interact with enzymes that inflame the skin. This interaction leads to soothing and diminishing blemishes caused by the inflammation.  Sabinene has been found to reduce the appearance of blemishes through its antioxidant properties and support of your body’s immune function.2 These properties, along with its ability to smooth fine lines and wrinkles, make Blue Tansy a prized ingredient in high-end skin care products.

MOOD BOOSTER

Blue Tansy’s light aroma creates an uplifting, positive atmosphere when diffused.  It can also be applied during stressful times to help you combat the mid-day funk and keep that stress at bay.  It works well as a natural perfume as well, especially when combined with complementary oils like Clary Sage, Geranium, Juniper Berry, Lavender, Petitgrain, Rose, Spearmint, and Ylang Ylang.

RESTORATIVE MASSAGE

After intense exercise or a stressful day, there is no better way to give your body the self-care that it needs to support your hormones than a restorative massage with Blue Tansy.  Its constituents include camphor (well-known for its ability to soothe sore muscles), making it a great oil to add to a massage oil to apply after intense exercise or a long day. Studies have found that camphor increases blood flow to the skin and muscles when applied topically, making it an ideal restorative after you exert yourself, whether through daily activity or exercise.

If you want even more power in your massage, try combining Blue Tansy Oil with a carrier oil, Lavender, and Helichrysum to relieve neck and shoulder tension. Another helpful combinations Wintergreen, Cypress, Lavender, or AromaTouch.

DIY SKIN CARE

When using Blue Tansy in your skin care products, be sure to dilute it to avoid any discoloration.  Simply add a drop to 1 or 2 ounces of your favorite moisturizer or cleanser, or dilute it with fractionated coconut oil and apply to get its benefits. Blue Tansy also makes a great addition to homemade lotion because it will act as a natural dye and fragrance on top of its many skin health benefits, helping you avoid undesirable additives.

Try this recipe to amp up your skin’s natural beauty and support your hormones in the process:

DIY Glowing Lotion Bars

⅔ cup organic beeswax pastilles
½ cup organic unrefined, cold-pressed coconut oil
½ cup organic cocoa butter
1 tsp. Vitamin E oil
8 drops Blue Tansy essential oil
4 drops Lavender essential oil
4 drops Ylang Ylang essential oil

Directions:
In a large glass jar, place all ingredients except essential oils. In a saucepan, boil 1 inch of water and turn the heat to simmer. Place the glass jar in the water and swirl until all ingredients are melted. Remove from heat and let cool slightly, appx. 3 minutes. Add the essential oils and stir to combine. Working quickly, pour the liquid into silicone molds to create the lotion bars. Let harden for 2-3 hours or speed up the process by putting in the refrigerator. Remove from mold and store in a sealed glass container until ready for use. The heat from your skin will melt the lotion as you rub.

EPSOM SALT BATH

If you prefer some alone time and love a good soak, try experiencing a magnesium-powered bath with the added benefits of Blue Tansy.  Simply run a bath of warm water and add ¼ cup of Epsom salts, swirling to dissolve. Then add 4 drops of Blue Tansy for a rejuvenating soak.  You can also add complementary oils like Lavender and Clary Sage to soak away the stresses of the day and help your body to rebalance those hormonal levels.  Be sure to drink water before and after your soak, and I recommend rinsing off afterwards in the shower to wash any toxins released down the drain.
