If you think of one word to describe a mom, what would it be? Loving? Caring? Kind? Patient? Most likely those are the first things that pop into a non-mom’s head. But what if you ask a mom herself? No doubt she would add Busy, Efficient, Multi-tasking, and TIRED to the other descriptors. High-quality essential oils can help to take you from basic mom to smart mom in no time, as they enable and empower you to take care of your family’s healthcare. Let’s take a look at a few of my absolute favorite essential oil recipes for to make a mom’s life easier.
KID POWER
Dealing with some headstrong personalities in your family? How about some temper tantrums with a side of whine? Yep. We all have been there and anyone who says differently is just putting on their Facebook face for the world. Real life is hard. But high-quality essential oils can help to ease the sting of those bumpy moments of childhood, and help you to empower yourself rather than your kids overpowering you.
MONSTER MUNCHER
Every kiddo knows the feeling bubbling up inside of them that they just cannot contain – it’s their inner monster. Ugly faces, rude words, and unkind actions often attack when the monster comes out. But bring in some deep belly breaths, counting to ten while squeezing and realizing your fists, and roll on a bit of this Monster Muncher Rollerball Blend, and you may just be able to calm that monster down before it has a chance to hurt someone’s feelings. For older kiddos, this blend will help them to manage emotions and calm teenage angst so that they can work through their emotions. This is also a great blend to calm their minds and bodies before bed at night!
Ingredients:
For ages 1-5 :
- 1 drop Marjoram
- 1 drop Lavender
- 1 drop Roman Chamomile
- 1 drop Frankincense
- Carrier oil of choice (I prefer Fractionated Coconut Oil or Sweet Almond Oil)
For ages 6-11:
- 2 drop Marjoram
- 3 drops Lavender
- 3 drops Roman Chamomile
- 2 drops Frankincense
- Carrier oil of choice (FCO or SAO)
For ages 12-17:
- 4 drops Marjoram
- 6 drops Lavender
- 6 drops Roman Chamomile
- 4 drops Frankincense
- Carrier oil of choice (FCO or SAO)
Directions:
Place all essential oils into a 10 mL glass rollerball bottle and fill to the top with a carrier oil. Roll on the back of the neck, down the spine, behind the ears, on the bottoms of feet, over the heart, or a combination of locations for optimum calm.
OUCH!
Kids are everywhere…up, down, around, and about, they manage to find themselves in interesting predicaments and precarious positions that usually lead to some sort of injury. And they are obsessed with band-aids. Whenever there is pain, whether it be a tiny speck of a boo-boo or a real doozy, this OUCH! Rollerball Blend can be your saving grace. And knowing that it supports their immune systems in the process will ease your mind over using it multiple times a day once they realize its magic!
Ingredients:
For ages 1-5 :
- 1 drop Lavender
- 1 drop Marjoram
- 1 drop Melaleuca
- 1 drop Frankincense
- Carrier oil of choice (I prefer Fractionated Coconut Oil or Sweet Almond Oil)
For ages 6-11:
- 3 drops Lavender
- 2 drops Marjoram
- 2 drops Melaleuca
- 3 drops Frankincense
- Carrier oil of choice (FCO or SAO)
For ages 12-17:
- 4 drops Lavender
- 4 drops Marjoram
- 4 drops Lemongrass
- 4 drops Melaleuca
- 4 drops Frankincense
- Carrier oil of choice (FCO or SAO)
Directions:
Place all essential oils into a 10 mL glass rollerball bottle and fill to the top with a carrier oil. Roll close to the wound for older kids (6-17) or nearby in a place where they can’t reach the oil for littles. Repeat every 15 minutes as needed…and cover with a band-aid if it helps!
HOME IS WHERE THE…STINK IS
Keeping your castle clean is another one of those must-do Mom responsibilities until you have your kiddos on board to help out. Incorporating essential oils into your cleaning routine not only rids your house of toxic chemicals that may be wreaking havoc on your systems, but it also provides a safe alternative for your kids to be involved in the sprucing up. Lung-burning fumes can be replaced with aromatherapeutic scents that please the mind, body, and soul. As you begin to transition to a chemical-free home, you will find that you need fewer products and you are spending less money on them! Give the next one a try and be amazed at how versatile it is.
ALL-PURPOSE FUNK-BE-GONE
You catch a whiff…and wonder where it came from? You do that sniff-here-sniff-there until… WHAT is that SMELL?!?! If you’re lucky, you find the source of the problem and can eliminate the stench by wrapping it in a thousand trashbags and taking it outside, but there may still be a lingering odor. Worse is when there is a scent and you have NO IDEA where it came from. Mamas, beware – do NOT resort to those chemical-laden sprays that supposedly envelope the stink in a burst of freshness. Please! Let me introduce you to the easiest way to rid your house of the funk – essential oils!
Ingredients:
- 1 ½ cups distilled water
- ½ cup witch hazel or white vinegar
- 5 drops Melaleuca essential oil
- 5 drops Grapefruit essential oil
- 5 drops Lemon essential oil
- 5 drops Peppermint or Lavender essential oil (depending on your scent preference)
– or –
20 drops dōTERRA Purify Cleansing Blend (the easiest option and the BEST blend for odors!)
Directions:
In a glass spray bottle, add the essential oils, witch hazel/vinegar, and distilled water. You can customize your essential oils depending on your scent preferences (I like Peppermint for body odor stink and Lavender for freshening my house and furniture). To use, simply spritz and let dry
MOM (pain/stress/hormones)
Women need to be able to get their “mom” on while at the same time truly caring for themselves. If you don’t take the time to balance your own hormones and your emotions, you will lose yourself in your family and no longer have a “you” to come back to. This is one more way that essential oils can balance out your life and help you to retain the control of your world. Let’s just take a moment to discuss two specific areas of your life – sleep and hormones.
SLEEPY MAMA WHIPPED BODY BUTTER
“As tired as a mother” is an expression that can be empathetically felt by mamas everywhere. There ain’t no tired like a MAMA tired…for sure. The exhaustion that goes hand-in-hand with motherhood often leads to other issues, such as lack of restful sleep, hormonal imbalance, and physical effects like dark eye circles and weight gain. Ladies, it’s time we give ourselves some support in addition to the foundation that we build for our families. Take some time today and make this Sleepy Mama Rub to moisturize your cares away before bedtime so that you can not only fall asleep, but stay asleep and feel rested in the morning.
Ingredients:
- 1 tsp. beeswax
- ½ cup Cocoa Butter
- ½ cup Shea Butter
- ½ cup organic refined coconut oil (or unrefined if you like a coconutty scent)
- 4 Tbsp. sweet almond or jojoba oil
- 10 drops Lavender
- 5 drops Bergamot
- 8 drops Roman Chamomile (or Vetiver if you suffer from sleepless nights)
– or –
- 10 drops dōTERRA® Serenity Restful Blend
- 10 drops dōTERRA® Balance Grounding Blend
Directions:
1) In a large saucepan, bring 2 inches of water to boil.
2) In a wide-mouthed glass jar or measuring cup, add the beeswax, butters, coconut oil, and sweet almond or jojoba oil. Stir until melted completely.
3) Carefully remove the jar from the water bath and let cool slightly, about 3-5 minutes.
4) Add the essential oils and stir to combine. Place the glass jar in the refrigerator for about 1 hour. You want it to be still soft somewhat, but slightly hardened.
5) Using a stand mixer with whisk attachment (or hand mixer), whip for 8-10 minutes until light and fluffy.
6) Store in a glass jar with a lid. To use, massage into your feet and legs before bedtime. It can be used on the whole body, but I would start small to see how you react to the essential oils.
WONDERLAND ROLLERBALL BLEND
Ever feel like your hormones have made you go down the rabbit hole, where everything is what it’s not and nothing is what it seems? Yep, me too…about once a month. But luckily I have found that a proper balance of nutrition, sleep, exercise, meditation and prayer, and consistent use of high-quality essential oils keeps me at the top of my gain and puts those hormones back in check. After all, you don’t want your kids to see you as the Queen of Hearts or let your mind go to where you’ve become the White Rabbit. Stay strong, Mama Alice, and oil on!
Ingredients:
- 20 drops Clary Sage essential oil
- 15 drops Lavender essential oil
- 10 drops Ylang Ylang essential oil
- 5 drops Bergamot essential oil
– or –
dōTERRA Clary Calm Monthly Blend for Women
Directions:
Add the essential oils to a 10 mL glass rollerball bottle and fill the rest with your choice of carrier oil. Roll on either pulse points (wrists, behind the ears, ankles, and over heart), bottoms of feet, and directly over your lower abdomen, or a combination of those that work the best for you 2-3 times daily. Be consistent and persistent with your usage, working with the oils to figure out the best way for it to work for your body and its cycle.
