As the weather chills down, that feeling of anticipation creeps in as the holiday season approaches. While many of us miss the earthy autumn feel for stressing over the months to come, I urge you to take a pause this fall and make your house a home with fresh autumn scents. Even better, you can do this with the oranges and deep reds of the season minus the toxic chemicals that dance on our TV screens and magazine pages promising the wonders of pumpkin spice in your home.
Let’s avoid the candles, the sprays, and the potpourris and replace them with our essential oils and diffusers. You can even use your dried flowers, pinecones, and picturesque seasonal decorations to gently diffuse the aromas into your space. Welcome your guests with the cozy scent of fall without the harmful, hidden additives.
WHY ESSENTIAL OILS ARE HEALTHIER THAN CANDLES
Although I love the serenity of a scented candles flickering in the evening, I hate the harmful effects they can have on my health. As a former candle lover, I’ll admit it was hard for me to kiss my cozy candles goodbye. But the more I experimented with essential oil blends, the more I fell in love with scents that can create intensely aromatic fragrances – without me having to worry about filling my home with toxins.
Most people equate formaldehyde as something use in funeral homes or dissection labs, but it is a very common additive to candles. When left burning for long periods of time, it can pervade your space at unsafe levels. Potentially carcinogenic, this toxin is just another on a list of chemicals that creep into our homes on a daily basis. You all know how vigilant I am about reducing the toxic load in my life and helping you to do the same. This fall, let’s ditch the candles and diffuse our essential oils!

TOP 5 NEW WAYS TO CREATIVELY DIFFUSE ESSENTIAL OILS THIS FALL
Did you know that there is more to diffusing than just plugging in a machine? Here are some of the top ways that I love to sneak in some aromatherapy everywhere in my life. And they also make great gifts as well!
#1 – Scented Centerpiece
Gather some pinecones to make a centerpiece in a decorative bowl. Spritz one of the EO blends above on the cones and enjoy the scents of fall whenever you are nearby!
#2 – Spicy Cleaning
Prep for guests by adding a few drops of your favorite blend to your vacuum filter. Enjoy the scent as you vacuum and welcome your friends with an inviting aroma.
#3 – Covert Cottonballs
Strategically place cotton balls with a few drops of your favorite blend in unscented potpourri for a sneaky fix. (I love using this one in the bathroom! Or place a drop of the blend inside your toilet paper rolls and enjoy the fresh scent with every spin!)
#4 – Upcycled Aromas
Pull double-duty by strategically boiling your empty oil bottles – choose those with complementary fall scents. Add the bottles to a metal pot full of water and bring to a boil. Add a few drops of Lemon essential oil to remove the labels if you choose. Allow to cool slightly before removing and peeling off the labels.
#5 – DIY Air Freshener
For a quick spritz-and-go solution, add your favorite blend times two to a 2 oz. glass spray bottle and fill the rest with witch hazel or water. Shake and spritz on furniture, curtains, blankets, or anywhere to freshen up the area.
BONUS – For fresh fall scents on the go, add a drop of your favorite blend to a wooden clothespin and attach it to the air vents in your car. Drive and jive to the aromas of the season!
