Roman Chamomile Essential Oil Uses & Benefits

Many of us recognize the “Chamomile” as one of our favorite calming teas on a rough day, but Roman Chamomile essential oil will bring new meaning to your definition of calm.  Known as one of the mildest and safest oils to use, Roman Chamomile finds favor for its pleasant floral sweetness similar to that of an apple.  Its daisy-like flowers are steam-distilled right here in the United States to produce an herbaceous essential oil full of calming esters.  From massages to beauty products, from tea to neat application, Roman Chamomile can be the key to peace and tranquility in your daily life.  Open your arms and welcome this soothing and peaceful oil into your collection as it is safe to use on almost anyone.

HISTORY OF ROMAN CHAMOMILE

Interestingly, Roman Chamomile is known by gardeners as the “plant’s physician” due to its positive effect on plants growing nearby.  Growing close to the ground, the plant is often known as the “earth-apple” due to its apple-like scent.  The Ancient Romans used Roman Chamomile to clear their minds before battle and give them courage during war.  The Ancient Egyptians prized Roman Chamomile for its properties for the skin and it is said that the women crushed the petals and used them as a compress for their skin.  It pops up throughout history in different uses, but mainly it is utilized for calming and its ability to soothe the soul.  And, of course, in tea!

SAFE FOR EVERYONE

Roman Chamomile and Lavender are great essential oils to have on hand when you have little ones to calm.  Both are very mild oils that can be used for a variety of reasons, so when in doubt, try one or both of these oils for your babies older than 6 months.  Many moms note that Roman Chamomile essential oil may soothe particularly cranky or colicky babies.  Any sort of issue that may cause irritability in babies or children can normally be lessened by either diffusing or applying a 1:1 dilution of Roman Chamomile to the bottoms of their feet.  For peaceful sleep, try diffusing Roman Chamomile and Lavender before bed at night.

SKIN SOOTHER

Adding Roman Chamomile essential oil to your favorite beauty and skin-care products will revolutionize your daily routine.  Not only can it be used for touch-treatments on unsightly blemishes, but it can also help to calm any skin irritations as well as giving you the benefit of calming aromatherapy.  Add a few drops to your shampoo or conditioner to promote healthy looking hair with the benefit of a great scent throughout the day.  You can also add it to your favorite full-body moisturizer or body butter for a soothing massage, or whip up a batch of your own with the recipe below.

SOOTHING WHIPPED BODY BUTTER

  • ½ c. shea butter
  • ½ c. mango butter
  • ½ c. raw, refined or unrefined coconut oil (depending on your love of coconut scent)
  • ½ c. jojoba or sweet almond oil
  • 20 drops Roman Chamomile essential oil
  • 10 drops Lavender essential oil

Melt the butters and regular oil in a glass container in a hot water bath or in a double boiler and then pour into the glass container. After letting cool slightly, add the essential oils and swirl. Pop in the refrigerator to solidify quickly or let sit at room temperature if you aren’t in a hurry. Place the mixture into a bowl and whip with your beaters until light and fluffy, probably several minutes. Scoop into a larger glass container and tightly seal for safe-keeping. To use, slather your body in this refreshing and moisturizing skin experience.

Note: You can customize the amount of essential oil depending on how strong you want the scent to be.

DIFFUSE FOR PEACE

In addition to adding a drop or two of Roman Chamomile essential oil to your hot water or favorite tea for a calming experience, you can also diffuse it to affect your entire household.  Whether you diffuse it alone or with some complementary essential oils, it is sure to promote a sense of calm and to help to eliminate feelings of stress and anxiety.  Some other calming oils that work great with Roman Chamomile include Lavender, Ylang Ylang, Clary Sage, or Patchouli.  For a calming and uplifting blend, try adding some citrus oils for a quick boost in mood.  This may become your new favorite diffuser blend!

SLEEPY TIME

When you need a restful night’s sleep, Roman Chamomile can be the solution to your wakeful nights.  Not only does it soothe the mind and reduce irritability, but its calming esters also promote peace and relaxation in the mind and soul.  It may also provide soothing and calm for the body’s systems to create a whole-body sense of calm.  Try the Sleepy Time Spray below on your bedclothes and pillows, or on your little one’s lovies or stuffed animals, to promote a restful night’s sleep.  To amp up the restfulness, try combining Roman Chamomile with Lavender first for increased relaxation by applying to your pulse points and the bottoms and tops of your feet.  You can also diffuse it at the same time to hit your body at all angles.  For especially troublesome nights or when your day has your body tied up in a knot, try missing it with your favorite carrier oil for a massage or mix 5 drops with ¼ c. Epsom salts and taking a nice soak in the tub.  And if you are still out of luck, add in some Vetiver and be ready to be knocked into dreamland!
