Another of my desert island oils – the ones I would have to have if somehow stranded – has to be Helichrysum. Known as the “everlasting flower” or the “immortal flower,” this show-stopping plant has been sought after for centuries for its ability to rejuvenate your skin and vitality. Almost like a floral fountain of youth, Helichrysum can do wonders for your skin and metabolism while simultaneously improving your mood. Cultivated in Corsica, France, and the dry, rocky regions of the Mediterranean, the golden-yellow flowers are carefully steam distilled to produce this distinctly herbaceous-honey-scented essential oil.
HISTORY OF HELICHRYSUM
Its name is derived from the Greek Helios meaning “sun” and chrysos meaning “gold” to describe the bright colors of the ball-shaped blossoms. In ancient Greece, the flower frequently found a place in herbal remedies for its restorative properties to the skin. They also believe in its power to unlock any spiritual blocks in the body and unclutter the mind for meditation or religious experiences. In South Africa, it also finds a home in many herbal medicines as well as simple everyday use. They often refer to it as “immortelle,” due to the potential ability of the blossoms to last up to seven years when kept inside. Many people today use the whole flower as an additive to their potpourris, but the essential oil is one of the lowest yielding oils on the market, hence the rather expensive price tag for only 5 mL. Regardless, it is worth every penny as this oil is renowned for its effectiveness and ability to positively affect most issues.
FIRST AID IN A BOTTLE
Many scientists are simply blown away by the restorative ability of Helichrysum essential oil on the skin and rarely is there any negativity or warnings surrounding its use. When in doubt, most people reach for Helichryusm or Frankincense to promote and support the body’s ability to heal. When used directly on the skin, Helichrysum soothes and promotes healthy skin cell regeneration which is why it is gaining popularity in many skin care products. You can be on the top of this curve by starting to add Helichrysum to your own daily moisturizers or toners to both reduce the appearance of blemishes or discolorations of the skin as well as for its rejuvenating properties to the skin. Your complexion will thank you as your skin transforms into a glowing, youthful complexion. In addition, it can also be taken orally as it may promote a healthy metabolism.
SKIN SENSATION
So let’s get specific on just how it can affect your skin. We have all had those undesirable moments when we have either forgotten to apply sunscreen or the sun just beat down all day on our delicate skin and there wasn’t enough sunscreen in the world to prevent that lovely pink-tinged damage. Helichrysum will be your best summer friend, and she will never leave you stranded. Just mix up a batch of Sunburn Soother featuring the marvelous Helichrysum essential oil and relax knowing that, if Mother Nature decides to torch you, you can fight back with her own medicine!
Sunburn Soother
- 10 drops Helichrysum essential oil
- 10 drops Frankincense essential oil
- 5 drops Peppermint essential oil
- 5 drops Lavender essential oil
- ¾ c. raw refined organic Coconut Oil
- 2 Tbsp. Shea Butter
Place the coconut oil and shea butter in a glass container and gently melt it in a double boiler or a hot water bath until all liquid. Remove from heat and let cool slightly. Add the essential oils and gently swirl or stir to mix. Pop in the refrigerator to solidify quickly or let sit at room temperature and it will gradually harden. Keep in your cooler on a hot day for relief after sunbathing, or use after a long day in the sun.
Note: You can also replace the coconut oil and shea butter with just fractionated coconut oil or jojojba oil, and mix in a glass spray bottle for an easy after-sun spritz.
DIFFUSE TO DIFFUSE
In need of some anger management in your life or know someone who is? Helichrysum is a great oil to diffuse in order to calm any bubbling anger issues and to uplift the subconscious mind. Combined with other calming and grounding oils such as Geranium, Clary Sage, Lavender, Frankincense, Helichrysum becomes a powerful ally when looking to diffuse a tense situation. You can also add a hit of citrus essential oil to promote positive energy and uplift the mood as well. Having a really bad day? Utilize the calming and renewing esters present in Helichrysum by combining it with your favorite carrier oil and indulging in a neck or body massage to pacify your mood. You will get the added benefit of its energizing properties and its ability to promote overall vitality.
FOUNTAIN OF YOUTH
dōTERRA uses Helichrysum in a variety of its skin care products, especially those targeted at reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. The great news is that you can add Helichrysum to your own favorite DIY products for a virtual fountain of youth at your fingertips. Diluting Helichrysum with fractionated coconut oil or jojoba oil (which greatly resembles our skin’s own oil, sebum) will create a great touch-and-go solution for targeting blemishes or age spots. It is also a great tool to have on hand if you have to have pictures taken or especially on a big day, like a wedding or another formal occasion where you want your skin to glow.
