Top 10 Ways to Reduce Toxic Load

In my Why Your Body Needs to Detox blog, we discussed the onslaught of toxic chemicals that plague our bodies from everywhere including the air, what we eat, what we put on our body, and even our internal toxic overload from years of chemical exposure.  I know firsthand the damage it can do to your body and the effect that it can have on your mind and spirit as well.  Suffering from toxic load, I made it my personal mission to rid my body of the harmful effects of toxic chemicals and free radicals naturally – no quick-fix plans, no gimmicks, and no restrictive diets.  What I found was that significant lifestyle changes and revising my personal outlook on how I approached life transformed my everything.  And you can, too!  Take a look at these easy ways to begin to reduce your toxic load.

1 – REVAMP YOUR EATING HABITS

Dozens of detox diets claim to be an easy fix for all of your body’s needs, but that simply isn’t the case.  Making any changes in your routine should be discussed with a trusted wellness provider and monitored carefully day-by-day to avoid further damage.  So many dangerous options can do way more harm than good, and I would hate for you to fall victim to the allure of quick weight loss or an easy-way-out plan.  They just don’t exist.

What does work is sticking to an 80%-plant based & whole foods diet for a limited amount of time and watching the amount of sugar that you consume.  I usually do a month-long reset twice per year, opting for diets that include actual food.  For tips on nixing your sugar habit, check out these 5 Steps to Breaking Up with Sugar.

An easy fix is to know when to buy organic.  Check out my blog on the Dirty Dozen fruits and veggies that you should start buying organic now!  Not even washing some will rid them of the toxic chemicals from pesticides and growing environments.

Superfoods can also help to amp up your antioxidant levels and give your body the nutrients that it craves.  Berries, raw nuts, greens, coconut oil, and, my personal favorite, Matcha green tea should be your go-to snacks and ingredients for your smoothies.  For more details, read about their benefits in my Five Superhero Superfoods blog.

2 – CONTROL YOUR STRESS

Normal levels of stress in your body produce cortisol levels that can easily be handled by our system; however, long-term stress creates an overabundance of stress hormones that wreak havoc on our bodies, throwing off internal systems that regulate essentials like digestion and reproduction.

Fortunately, immediate solutions include regular deep breathing, exercise, and being mindful of your specific environmental stressors.  Using essential oils can also help your mind and body to find the calm that it so desperately needs.  Check out my blog on DIY Stress Reduction and the 7 EOs to Take You from Stress to Zen.

3 – OIL-PULLING

An amazing addition to your overall health and wellness, oil pulling can help your body to reduce harmful toxins as well as revitalize your oral hygiene, including whitening your teeth, freshening your breath, and ridding your mouth of nasties.

I recommend oil pulling once a day for 2 weeks, and then taking a break for 3 weeks before starting again.  You simply take 1 Tbsp. of oil (coconut oil is my fav), swish like mouthwash for 20 minutes, spit, rinse with salt water, and then brush your teeth.  Whatever you do, do NOT swallow the oil!

4 – GREEN CLEANING

Did you know that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says that the air inside our homes is typically 200-500 percent MORE POLLUTED than the air outside!  Why?  Toxic household cleaning products.  Yikes!  Do your body a favor and eliminate these toxins quickly and easily from your environment!

There are easy steps that you can take to majorly cut back on toxic cleaning chemicals.  In fact, I really only use a handful of products in my house to keep it in top condition:  baking soda, vinegar, castile soap, salt, washing soda, Borax, citric acid, FCO, and essential oils, including dōTERRA’s On Guard Cleaner Concentrate.  With that, I do everything, from laundry and dishwasher detergent to hand soap, from bathroom scrubs to everyday hard-surface cleaners.

You will not only be amazed at the incredible job these natural products do, but also how easy they are to make and how GOOD they smell!

5 – MAKEOVER YOUR BEAUTY REGIMEN

Did you know that newborn babies are born with around 300 chemicals already in their bloodstream?  Even if moms eat right, use all-natural products, and guard their environments, they still fall victim to the chemicals in the world around us.  And with today’s average woman applying over 160 chemicals to her body every day, including endocrine disruptors, toxins, carcinogens, and more, we have a lot to think about.

Keep your exposure to a minimum by knowing what you put on your body – makeup, lotion, hair products, soaps and cleansers…anything found in your bathroom cabinet can put chemicals into your body.  The Environmental Working Group provides information about safer alternatives, so check out their site when considering new products.

Makeover your beauty regimen by choosing all-natural products or by making your own.  You will be amazed at the difference in the quality of your skin and how your body feels!

My blog also has some amazing recipes that you can use to makeover your routines, including shaving, skin care, foot care, sunscreen, and more!

6 – GIVE YOUR LIVER SOME LOVE

Ease up on your liver! Awareness of what our liver does on a daily basis can be eye-opening – it is our main organ for protecting the body from toxins.  But it can only do so much.  Add in the onslaught of toxins over years coupled with the long-term effects of stress hormones in our system, and the liver simply can’t do its job.  Remember that, in addition to filtering out toxins, it also has to filter the rest of your body’s needs.

Easy things you can do to help show your liver some love include minimizing alcohol intake, reducing toxin exposure by following the suggestions on this blog, drinking lots of water with lemon, sipping dandelion tea, and considering a liver support supplement like this one.

7 – EXERCISE & HYDRATE

Regular exercise helps your body to sweat and release toxins naturally while keeping your lungs in top condition to filter out debris and toxins.  In addition, subcutaneous fatty tissue can store toxins, so reducing the amount of fat in your body can minimize toxins.  Plus, getting the body working and in top condition helps your systems to function at optimum levels.

Your liver’s ability to change toxins into water-soluble chemicals helps your body dispel the yuck naturally.  But if you aren’t hydrated enough before you exercise, your body can’t do its job.  Likewise, if you aren’t hydrated through the day, then your body can’t filter and excrete enough toxins in your urine.

8-10 glasses of water per day should do you in addition to what you get in your foods.  Hate drinking water?  Spike it up with some flavor by using infusions!  Check out Top 5 Ways to Dress Up Your Water.

8 – BE GOOD TO YOUR GUT

Colon and digestive health are essential to natural toxin removal. Anything that stresses the digestive system reduces its ability to function properly, potentially causing it to leak toxins out into the body.

More significant issues like candida overgrowth or a lack of healthy flora due to antibiotics or diet issues can cause major problems.  Add in your body naturally shutting down your digestive system when stress levels are high, and it’s no wonder you are suffering from gas, bloating, painful digestion, IBS, and digestive irregularities.

Simple fixes like chewing your food and eating slowly can begin to help your gut.  Other easy fixes include deep breathing exercises during moments of stress, reducing stress levels, revamping eating habits, and incorporating daily probiotics through fermented foods, yogurts, kefir, or supplements.

Essential oils can also help you to be good to your gut.  Check out my blog on the Top 5 Essential Oils for Gut Health to learn more.

9 – USE ESSENTIAL OILS

From cleansing the air in your personal environment to helping your body to recover from stressors and internal toxic load, essential oils bridge the gap while you begin to transform your lifestyle.

Some of my favorites include Lemon, Lavender, Grapefruit, Peppermint, and Rosemary.  Check out my blog on the Top 5 Oils to Reduce Toxic Load to see how you can incorporate these essential oils into your routine.

10 – KNOW & TRUST YOUR BODY

No one knows your body like you, but sometimes we try to ignore it rather than accept that there is a problem.  Recognizing the symptoms that begin to creep in will help us to be proactive in our self-care routines.  Things like fatigue, weight change, mood swings, digestive upset, and headaches are all indicators that something is off-balance.

Know your body.

Trust yourself.

And remember that YOU are in charge of your own healthcare!
