Neroli Essential Oil Uses and Benefits

It’s like nothing you’ve ever smelled! Floral, citrusy, slightly bitter, and herbaceous, Neroli essential oil now finds its home in a doTERRA Touch rollerball bottle, conveniently prediluted and ready to work its magic whenever you need it.

Neroli is the perfect addition to your self-care routines, with its offerings in hormonal support, mental health, a glowing complexion or a simple perfume.

Neroli, (or Citrus aurantium var. amara) essential oil is steam-distilled from the flowers of the Bitter Orange tree, the same tree that provides us Petitgrain and Bitter Orange essential oils from other parts of the plant.  Native to Italy and northern Africa, it has been used in skin care and fragrances since the 17th century.

With a soft, feminine aroma, it is one of the most widely used essential oils in the perfume industry. But its uses aren’t merely cosmetic — it offers some deep, healing benefits to accompany its fragrance!

Neroli is a great essential oil to add to your collection of hormone powerhouse ingredients. Research has shown it to be anti-inflammatory. This will help calm your system and allow your body to return to balance. No matter what stage of life you are in, from PMS to menopause, Neroli can have a powerful effect on pesky symptoms. It will also help your body return to its own hormonal synergy.

Ever feel like you are losing control of yourself in the time leading up to your period? PMS is real, and the symptoms that it creates can often be hard to navigate. Thankfully, you don’t have to go it alone. Neroli can relieve the pain and symptoms associated with PMS when you apply it topically or inhale its aroma.

Just roll some directly from the doTERRA Neroli Touch bottle onto your lower abdomen to get relief from cramping, bloating, or other discomforts. If your mood is in need of adjustment during that phase of your cycle, Neroli’s stress-reducing, calming attributes will make it your best friend!

If you are going through perimenopause and menopause, I have good news for you! Neroli essential oil can significantly decrease some of the physical discomforts associated with this stage of life.

Research has also shown it can increase sexual desire, lower blood pressure, and encourage healthy levels of cortisol and estrogen in your body. All of these results can be simply harnessed by inhaling the scent of the oil on a regular basis.

Here is a great rollerball blend to help you harness the power of Neroli and other hormone superstar oils:

10 drops Clary Sage essential oil
8 drops Lavender essential oil
6 drops Geranium essential oil
5 drops Ylang Ylang essential oil
4 drops Bergamot and/or Neroli essential oil

In a 10ml glass rollerball bottle, combine essential oils and top off with a carrier oil of your choice. To use, apply to pulse points as needed during times of emotional stress and breathe deeply.

When your gut is unhealthy, the rest of your body suffers. A bacterial imbalance in your intestines (what we call gut dysbiosis) can be a root cause of autoimmunity, hormone problems, brain fog, and so much more. To keep all those little bacteria happy, it is important to cut inflammation, eat foods that nourish you, and support your systems. Essential oils like Neroli can help by cutting down on that inflammation that causes so many problems, as well as keeping harmful bacteria at bay without hurting the good strains.

Neroli essential oil is a powerful mood-booster. Its floral aroma can calm anxious, racing thoughts and uplift your outlook. You know I love essential oils because they really get to the root of what’s going on instead of just masking what you are feeling. Neroli is no exception: inhaling its scent can actually lower your cortisol levels, your perceived stress, and even your blood pressure.

Self-care is the best way to work essential oils into your routine. One thing I love is a calming, soothing massage using oils. These are designed to lessen my stress and calm my mind. With a carrier oil, add a few drops each of Neroli, Lavender, Ylang Ylang, and Marjoram for a powerful stress-relieving experience in your next massage!

Is your complexion needing some help? Whether the issue is hormone-related or caused by bacteria or fungus, Neroli essential oil can help. Its soothing properties can clear your blemishes while its antimicrobial and antifungal constituents work to address the root of what is going on. Acne related to PMS or hormonal imbalances can also be treated by applying Neroli to problem areas.

Simply add a drop to a dollop of your daily moisturizer or dab with your fingertip directly on blemishes to help clear them away.

Conventional perfumes are packed full of mysterious chemicals and fragrances that can disrupt your natural balance of hormones. Did you know that companies can just put “fragrance” on an ingredient label, but that it can mean many different things? One step towards purging your home of harsh, toxic substances is to ditch and switch your perfume.

Neroli’s feminine, floral notes make it a great one to include along with Lavender, Clary Sage, Bergamot, Geranium, Rose, Hawaiian Sandalwood; and/or Roman Chamomile. Not only will you smell fantastic, but also the benefits from all of these oils will be yours for the taking!

Scent is a personal preference, so you’ll want to experiment until you find one that fits you. Here are some ideas to get you started!
