Top 10 Essential Oils for Glowing, Youthful Skin

Back before I was enlightened on all the benefits of essential oils, I had some pretty serious dark pigmentation on my face that confronted me every time I looked in the mirror.

I tried bleaching products, lasers, and chemical peels…and now I cringe at the thought!

No matter what I did, I just couldn’t get rid of them!

Then along came essential oils. As I began incorporating them into my daily regime and hardcore researching the science behind their success, I discovered the skin benefits that some oils offer for the reduction of the appearance of scars and pigmentation.

So, I used myself as a guinea pig!

I chose a blend that I heard would help, and, after researching its components, I committed to applying it daily, morning and night, for 90 days.

And guess what? It worked!

I got my face back. The pigmentation spots were gone!

That blend was Immortelle by doTERRA. I still turn to this blend pretty much daily because my battle with pigmentation continues every time I go out into the sun (and I live in San Diego, so that’s a lot). Even with wearing a hat and sunscreen, pigmentation has a way of reappearing!

Essential Oil Support for Skincare

Whatever your personal skin health battle is, essential oils can help you regain youthful, glowing skin without harsh chemicals. Here are my 10 favorite oils to recommend for different skin problems (in no particular order) and some of my favorite recipes to put them to use!

#1 – Helichrysum

This is one of my all-time favorite oils for skin health. Cuts, bruises, eczema, mature skin, scarring, acne, pigmentation — you name it, and Helichrysum essential oil can probably help!

#2 – Frankincense

This king of oils is so calming and soothing to your skin. It can help slow signs of aging by minimizing wrinkles, supporting skin regeneration, and soothing inflammation. Its grounding scent will have you hooked in no time!

#3 – Rose

If your skin tends toward being dry or you feel like your complexion is showing some age, Rose is going to be your new best friend. It has antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory compounds that can help manage difficult skin, soothe dryness, and even help with psoriasis and dermatitis! (1) Rose is so powerful that even just inhaling its scent can help your skin maintain water, keeping it supple and hydrated! (2)

#4 – Sandalwood

This oil is in many cosmetic products today because of its ability to soothe skin imperfections and promote your overall health. It’s also cleansing and protective against environmental threats to your skin’s appearance! Research also shows that it may even help prevent skin cancer by causing cancer cells to die while promoting your skin’s cellular vitality. (3)

#5 – Lavender

If you are only going to do one thing to help your skin, I suggest getting some Lavender! It helps calm your mind and body and has fantastic benefits for your skin, no matter what skin type you have. It helps regenerate skin cells so it does wonders for mature skin, pigmentation problems, and scarring. It is also soothing to acne and irritated skin to help keep your complexion glowing!

#6 – Melaleuca (Tea Tree)

This is one of the best-known essential oils for treating acne. Its antibacterial qualities and balancing benefits can help diminish and prevent breakouts and keep your skin properly hydrated.

#7 – Roman Chamomile

This calming, gentle essential oil will do wonders to soothe breakouts and promote healthy skin. Calming irritations, reducing blemishes, and promoting your emotional and mental health, Roman Chamomile is a great oil for the whole family!

#8 – Geranium

This beautiful, floral oil is great for regulating oil production in your skin and improving elasticity, which can help to reduce wrinkles. It also promotes circulation, which means it can help your body heal bruises, burns, cuts, and certain skin conditions more quickly! It is also a powerful anti-inflammatory agent, which can soothe redness and irritation. These skin benefits combined with its hormone balancing qualities make it a great one for people dealing with acne caused by hormone chaos or PCOS!

#9 – Citrus Oils

Citrus essential oils are great for toning and purifying your skin, along with promoting your immune system and balancing your mood. Lemon essential oil in particular can help combat wrinkles and reduce damage caused by oxidation and sun exposure. (4)

You may be hesitant to use them on your skin because of their photosensitivity, but they are perfectly safe and effective to use in your skin care products as long as you’re careful. I always just use my citrus oils on my skin at night so I avoid UV exposure for 10-12 hours!

#10 – Yarrow|Pom

This one-of-a-kind blend is so powerful for your skin’s health! The synergistic combination of Yarrow essential oil and Pomegranate Seed oil supports your skin’s ability to protect and heal itself. You can use it topically to help prevent aging, reduce pigmentation problems, and soothe irritations, or take it internally to calm the inflammation that could be the source of your skin problems!

Skin-Loving Blends

If you’re looking for quick fixes on the go, here are some of my favorite ways to combine these powerhouse oils for my skin’s health:

Soothing Skin Inflammation Rollerball Blend

Don’t Forget the Root Cause

As always, there’s a reason for any sort of issue your body is facing. Nothing happens in a vacuum, and there’s a root cause for skin issues just like for anything else. Your skin is a window into your body, and blemishes, age spots, pigment, and other issues are signs that something is off.

The biggest causes of skin problems are typically related to either your gut health or hormones (or both). I’ve collected my top 11 supplements to help combat overall body-wide inflammation to restore hormone balance in this beautiful guide!
