Top 5 Essential Oil Recipes for Perimenopause and Menopause

Sometimes it’s easy to feel like you can’t catch a break.

Your job is stressful. Your body is changing in ways you can’t predict (and haven’t been educated about). Your life is busy, and it just doesn’t feel like there’s enough of yourself to go around.

Women expect hot flashes, painful sex, and things like that in menopause…

But when it hits, it still feels like it comes out of nowhere.

That’s because women just haven’t been told what to expect during perimenopause and menopause.

Things like…

  • That perimenopause can start as early as age 35 and last 10+ years
  • That your hormones don’t just gradually and quietly fade until you don’t have periods anymore. Instead, it’s often a violent-feeling rollercoaster of spikes and dips you can’t predict.
  • That hormone replacement is NOT your only option to feel better through menopause. You do have choices.

You can learn everything you NEED to know about perimenopause, menopause, and beyond in my newest book, The Essential Oils Menopause Solution.

This book will explain what to expect, how to relieve your biggest symptoms, how to set yourself up for success through each transition, and a ready-made plan to create a body that works FOR you again!

Why Essential Oils?

My newest book includes WAY more than just essential oils. And that is because essential oils can’t heal the underlying issues that are causing the problems in your body. They can’t replace hormones. They just don’t work like that.

BUT they ARE amazing boosters that deliver immediate wins along the road to a healthier, happier life.

Instead of reaching for your glass of wine to wind down (which stresses out your liver, even more, leading to more toxins and excess estrogen recirculating in your body and causing more damage)…

Or instead of your pick-me-up chocolate treat midday that disrupts your delicate insulin balance…

You can experience immediate calm, relief from some discomforts, and instant wins thanks to the power of essential oils.

They work best when combined with nutrition, supplements, and other lifestyle practices, which is why I work them into almost every chapter of The Essential Oils Menopause Solution.

But to get you started, today I’m sharing 5 simple essential oil recipes to get you some INSTANT WINS when you need them most by addressing some of the biggest complaints I hear from women in perimenopause or menopause!

Cool Your Hot Flashes

Combining the cooling power of Peppermint with hormone-supporting oils like Geranium and Clary Sage will bring you instant relief from annoying and persistent hot flashes!

As always, I encourage you to get back to the root cause to address the things that are causing your symptoms in the first place (and I go into some of the biggest hot flash drivers in this post).

But in the meantime, here’s an amazing spritz to have on hand to cool off fast!

Cool Your Hot Mess Spray

Ingredients:
7 drops Peppermint essential oil
7 drops Clary Sage essential oil
5 drops Geranium essential oil
Witch hazel or distilled water

Directions:
Add essential oils to a 2oz glass spray bottle. Fill the rest of the way with witch hazel or distilled water. Shake well before each use. Spray onto your face, neck, or chest as needed whenever you feel a hot flash starting!

Get Better, More Restful Sleep

Whether it’s constant mental chatter, restlessness, or just plain insomnia keeping you up at night, the lack of sleep can start to take its toll on you physically and mentally.

Many women find that sleep gets harder as they get into perimenopause or menopause (check out this post for some reasons why this happens), but that doesn’t mean you have to settle for it!

Essential oils are great to support healthy sleep hygiene to help you feel more peaceful and relaxed leading up to bedtime. Many women experience better sleep when using a blend like the one I share below!

Sleep Support Rollerball Blend

Ingredients:
8 drops Lavender essential oil
8 drops Roman Chamomile essential oil
5 drops Ylang Ylang essential oil OR Clary Sage essential oil
4 drops Cedarwood essential oil
4 drops Vetiver essential oil

Directions:
Add all essential oils to a 10ml glass rollerball bottle. Fill the rest of the way with a carrier oil (like fractionated coconut), replace the top and cap, and swirl to combine. Apply to your spine, use as a massage blend, apply to the bottoms of your feet and cover with socks immediately before you go to bed each night.

Ease Vaginal Dryness Naturally with This

If dryness is ruining the moment and making intimacy painful, you need this simple DIY lube recipe in your life!

Women in perimenopause and menopause are “expected” to have dryness down there, but that doesn’t mean we have to suffer through painful sex or sign away this part of our lives. You CAN have a fulfilling and pleasurable experience, no matter your menstrual status!

I go into more depth in this post to help you approach vaginal dryness in a more holistic way, but the reality is that a natural lube may be necessary moving forward because of the changes your body is experiencing.

Instead of reaching for dangerous, synthetic chemical-filled options for your most delicate area, I recommend making your own with ingredients you probably already have in your kitchen or medicine cabinet!

Please note: Do not use this lubricant if condoms are your method of contraception.

Dr. Mariza’s Natural Lubricant With Essential Oils

Ingredients:
½ cup fractionated coconut oil (liquid coconut oil or MCT oil) ¼ cup aloe vera 1 teaspoon vitamin E oil 3-5 drops essential oils (Frankincense, Lavender, Roman Chamomile, Clary Sage, Rose)

Directions:
In an 8-ounce glass jar, add fractionated coconut oil, aloe vera, and vitamin E. Mix ingredients together well. Add 3-5 drops of essential oil. I personally love to combine gentle floral oils like Lavender and Rose essential oils. Apply before sexual intercourse.

Your Instant Energy Boost (No Coffee Required)

If you find yourself struggling to get started in the morning or experiencing midday dips in your energy, you aren’t alone. This time of your life is busy and stressful in many ways, and it’s easy to feel like your energy tank just doesn’t hold as much as it used to!

Here’s an essential oil blend that is a great option to increase your focus and productivity level and help you feel more energized (without needing that sugary treat or coffee pick-me-up that’ll only make the problem worse in the long run):

Get It Done Rollerball Blend

Ingredients:
8 drops Peppermint essential oil
8 drops Wild Orange essential oil
6 drops Frankincense essential oil
4 drops Rosemary essential oil

Directions:
Add all essential oils to a 10ml glass rollerball bottle. Fill the rest of the way with a carrier oil (like fractionated coconut), replace the top and cap, and swirl to combine.

Apply this blend to your wrists, neck, or pulse points throughout the day to keep your energy and focus up. These oils work together to clear brain fog, energize your body, and help you stay alert through any midday slump!

In a rush? Just inhaling the aroma of Peppermint or Wild Orange (straight from the bottle!) with a few deep belly breaths can be enough to clear the fog and get you back on track instantly.

Bad Mood Buster

The mood swings. The negativity. The stress.

They all may feel like too much to handle sometimes. Your family and coworkers feel like they’re walking on eggshells, and most of the time, you may not even know what’s setting you on edge.

Mood changes and unpredictability are a “normal” part of perimenopause and menopause. As your hormones shift, the balance of the brain chemicals that determine your mood gets thrown off.

This change may feel especially acute during perimenopause when the brain chemical changes along with drastic hormone fluctuations set you up for a PMS roller coaster that NOBODY wants to be on.

Whether you feel the mood swing more in one time of the month, or if they are a constant part of your life right now, there is no shame in this. Your body is going through lots of changes, so give yourself some grace!

While you are working to manage your stress levels and create calm in your mind and body through regular self-care, here is a blend that can help banish your blues and give you a more positive outlook immediately:

Release Negative Emotions Rollerball Blend

Ingredients:
7 drops Bergamot essential oil
6 drops Frankincense essential oil
6 drops Lavender essential oil
4 drops Lemongrass essential oil
3 drops Tea Tree (Melaleuca) essential oil

Directions:
Add all essential oils to a 10ml glass rollerball bottle. Fill the rest of the way with a carrier oil (like fractionated coconut), replace the top and cap, and swirl to combine.

Apply the blend to your palms and inhale with several deep breaths for an instant mood boost. If you are dealing with ongoing stress, apply to your wrists, inner arms, and neck regularly to help you release negativity, maintain a positive outlook and calm your stress.
